butted heads with former Tory leader Michael Howard while the pair were discussing party histories on an episode of Sunday With .
The Scottish actor, 58, dismissed the ex-government leader’s claims that the Conservative party was ‘the most successful political party in the world’ over the weekend.
Michael, 81, served as leader of the right-wing party from 2003 to 2005 and was quickly shot down by the Spy Kids star over his superiority claims.
Stating his former party was the ‘most successful’ as they ‘adapted principles in a pragmatic way to the challenges that face the country’, the ex-leader was instantly challenged by the actor.
Alan retorted with a bemused look and slammed the comments as being a fallacy, saying: ‘I think you talk about, we heard about Boris’s perspective, that’s your [Howard’s] perspective.’
He continued explaining his views to the politician in front of the TV panel: ‘I don’t think that’s a perspective that is shared by the majority of people in this country right now, at this moment.
‘And one of the things I’m taking from all these interviews is the question of Brexit and about how far, they could have gone further, is Rishi Sunak not going as far as he could?
‘Tell me some positive things about Brexit. Because we never seem to hear about those.’
He spoke after listening to the former leader recite his strong opinions that included: ‘If you look at the challenges our country has faced we inherited an economy that was just coming out of the financial crash, we then had the pandemic.
‘We now have a war on the continent of Europe. No recent government has ever faced challenges of this sort.’
Elsewhere on the show, the Son of the Mask actor was quizzed on his thoughts about the Labour Party.
He exclaimed that he was ‘horrified’ that they would not be throwing out the idea of the UK honours system.
‘I think that’s the problem in British politics. You have the Conservative Party and then Conservative light with the Labour Party,’ the star suggested.
Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg airs on Sundays on BBC One at 9 am.
