Austin’s vocal coach has already leaped to the, saying it was difficult to ‘switch off’, while the actor himself said that getting Elvis’ deep drawl right was his ‘only focus’ for years.
The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor shares another update on his accent on Friday’s The Graham Norton Show, revealing he had ‘damaged’ his vocal cords.
He appeared alongside the likes of Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh, Scottish actor Jack Lowden, Diversity star Ashley Banjo and Brit-nominated Mimi Webb on the famous red sofa.
Explaining why he still sounds a little like Elvis, he says: ‘I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing.
‘One song took 40 takes!’
On the film’s reception and its eight Oscar nominations, The Intruders star said: ‘It has been a whirlwind and it’s amazing because when you are making a film you never really know how it will be received.
‘With this one there were so many ways it could go wrong so to be received in the way it has means the world to me.’
In the film, Austin stars alongside Tom Hanks, who plays Presley’s infamous manager Colonel Tom Parker.
After the Golden Globes, the actor endured a difficult week when Elvis’ only child Lisa Marie Presley, with who he attended the ceremony,
Lisa was over the moon with Austin’s portrayal of her late father, who died of a heart attack in 1977 at just 42 years old.
In an interview at the Golden Globes, she said she was ‘proud’ of Austin’s portrayal of her father and the film meant ‘everything’ to her and her family.
Following her death, Austin said in a statement that his ‘heart is completely shattered’ at the ‘tragic and unexpected loss of Lisa Marie’.
‘I am eternally grateful for the time I was lucky enough to be near her bright light and will forever cherish the quiet moments we shared,’ he continued.
‘Her warmth, her love and her authenticity will always be remembered.’
