Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, and creator Lee Sung Jin have responded to the, where he joked about being a ‘successful rapist’.
Viewers of the ten-parter were left horrified by Choe’s remarks in the 2014 episode, titled Erection Quest, of his now-defunct DVDASA, during which he describes forcing a beauty salon worker to perform oral sex on him.
Yeun, along with Wong and Sung Jin, who are also executive producers on the show, have now decided to address the controversy.
In a joint statement they said: ‘The story David Choe fabricated nine years ago is undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing.
‘We do not condone this story in any way, and we understand why this has been so upsetting and triggering.’
The statement that was released to continued: ‘We’re aware David has apologised in the past for making up this horrific story, and we’ve seen him put in the work to get the mental health support he needed over the last decade to better himself and learn from his mistakes.’
In the podcast, Choe went into graphic detail about the sexual assault during which he also said he forced the woman to masturbate him and grabbed her bottom without her consent.
‘The thrill of possibly going to jail, you know, that’s what achieved the erection quest,’ Choe commented.
Choe claimed in a statement posted on his now-defunct website that the incident never happened and that if he were ‘guilty of anything’ it would be ‘bad storytelling.’
‘I never thought I’d wake up one late afternoon and hear myself called a rapist. It sucks. Especially because I am not one. I am not a rapist. I hate rapists, I think rapists should be raped and murdered,’ the statement read.
‘If I am guilty of anything, it’s bad storytelling in the style of douche. Just like many of my paintings are often misinterpreted, the same goes with my show.’
Beef revolves around Amy Lau (Wong) and Daniel Cho (Yeun) who are perfect strangers, before battling it out in an extreme road rage incident.
Failing contractor Daniel and self-made plant entrepreneur Amy may seem entirely different, but they have more in common than they think in that they are two deeply unsatisfied people.
Choe plays Daniel’s cousin Issac who often assists in the revenge plans.
