At the exact same time as Sony is trying to stop Xbox from adding to Game Pass, they’re doing exactly that with .
Another month, another line-up of free PlayStation Plus games has L***ed online. Although given the timing, July’s offerings are pretty mind-boggling.
That’s because the headliner is 2020’s . As a reminder, Microsoft is looking to buy Call Of Duty as part of its , which is this week .
One of the primary reasons for the acquisition is so Microsoft can have Call Of Duty on Game Pass, with Sony having fought viciously hard for more than a year to prevent that. That makes the timing of this release seem absurdly incompetent, given how much help it is to Microsoft, in proving that Sony are just as keen to use Call Of Duty in their own subscription service.
Admittedly, Sony didn’t intend the news to leak out just as they were in court, trying to argue against the Activision Blizzard deal, but the line-up does almost always leak out at about this time every month.
And even so, the official reveal will still be sometime in the next few days, so the timing is still farcically bad.
Sony and US regulator the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have expressed concerns about Microsoft locking the series to Xbox post-acquisition, but the company continues to promise that won’t happen.
In fact, Microsoft has pledged to not only allow Call Of Duty games on PS Plus, but to let them be . Although Sony would be expected to fork over some high fees for them. Whether they’d be any higher than what they’ve just paid for Cold War is unknown.
The details come via the ever-reliable billbil-kun, who has been accurately leaking the monthly line-ups since 2021.
Writing for , billbil-kun adds that Black Ops Cold War will be joined by and indie survival game Endling – Extinction Is Forever, with all three to be available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from July 2.
The former’s addition makes a lot of sense since the sequel is coming out in just a few months. Making the first game free for PS Plus users means they may be inclined to purchase Alan Wake 2 once it launches.
While it isn’t exactly the PlayStation Game Pass counterpart many hoped it would become, PS Plus is apparently , managing to gradually earn more subscribers since it was revamped last year.
However, industry analysts say that sales for subscription services like PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass , with people finding that they simply don’t have time to take advantage of all the games, no matter if they are free at the point of download.
