has suggested that cancel culture is as dangerous to society as Covid ahead of the launch of his new TalkTV show Uncensored.
The former Good Morning Britain presenter is set to return to television screens later this month with his series that aims to ‘cancel the cancel culture which has infected societies around the world.’
‘You shouldn’t be shamed or vilified or cancelled for having an opinion, unless you genuinely are spewing hateful bigoted stuff,’ Piers slammed, in conversation with Metro.co.uk.
‘I don’t intend to do that; I’ve never done that before in my broadcasting time. I want to be a broad church to any kind of view.’
Piers stressed he wants his new show to ‘re-platform those who have been de-platformed’.
‘I want to un-cancel those who’ve been cancelled,’ he said. ‘I want to basically make a point that cancel culture is as dangerous to society in its own way, in terms of its attack on free speech, as coronavirus has been.
‘It could be, over the next few years and decades, more dangerous. I think if a democracy like ours, or America or Australia, where this show will be airing, loses what free speech means and stops defending an individual’s right to an opinion, you’re not a democracy.
‘This show, and the network, will be standing up for democracy.’
Piers previously teased that he wants ‘to annoy all the right people’ with his new series, which will include opinion, debate, and big interviews.
His hour-long show will air on TalkTV in the UK, on Fox Nation in the US, and on Sky News Australia in Australia.
The journalist’s return comes after he quit Good Morning Britain following a row over comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex in regards to her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Discussing the interview on the ITV show the following day, Piers said he did not believe Meghan’s claims.
His comments sparked more than 50,000 complaints, the most in Ofcom’s history.
