One of ’s biggest breakout stars has excelled in her first English-speaking role.Â
While filming for an thriller mini-series called Disclaimer, the 28-year-old is said to have greatly impressed her co-star
Oscar-winning Cate, 53, reckons that even she wouldn’t have been able to handle acting in a second language as well as Hoyeon, who speaks Korean and English.
She sweetly said: ‘I mean, if you’d asked me to go to Korea having never acted before in something in Korean, I would not have had that level of composure.’
The compliments didn’t end there for Hoyeon, who previously went by her full name Jung Hoyeon. Cate added: ‘You fall in love with her as a human being, but then she’s so magnetic as a performer.’
She told that she was ‘absolutely blown out of the water’ by her talent, and praised the rising star for being completely prepared.
The programme is based on a 2015 novel by Renee Knight. Cate plays journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, who discovers she is a prominent character in a book that appears on her bedside table.
A secret she has tried to keep hidden begins to unravel her life, meaning audiences will be treated to plenty of twists and turns.
Hoyeon decided to accept the role of Kim, who will appear in all seven episodes, as she loves ‘challenging herself’.
‘Trying to speak English well and act well at the same time was very challenging.’
‘Maybe too challenging,’ she quickly added.
Prior to Squid Game Hoyeon, who has been modeling since she was 16, hadn’t done any professional acting. She took on the role of Kang Sae-byeok, who competed in the game in order to reunite her family.
The series, which was watched by 142million households, made Hoyeon a huge star. She is now an ambassador for fashion house Louis Vuitton, and is also set to star in film The Governesses alongside Lily-Rose Depp.
When she’s not on our screens Hoyeon spends time with boyfriend, Korean actor Lee Dong-hwi and their two pet cats.
Disclaimer does not yet have a release date, but will be available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
