While the country is jittery with anticipation ahead of as England take to the pitch for a , are having a right laugh.
The channel – who did a just weeks ago – have pulled a blinder today and are airing 1997 disaster film during the Euro finals tonight.
With 21.6 million viewers watching England’s semi-final win over the Netherlands on ITV, it’s unlikely many fans will tune in; all eyes will be on the and , who have the rights to cover the historic final against Spain, taking place in Berlin this evening.
England last qualified for the Euro final in 2020, when they lost out on the trophy by one penalty, leaving fans across the country devastated.
So the stakes really couldn’t be higher this time around, as the squad have never won the tournament – or any international trophies for that matter since 1966, when they won the World Cup.
Football fans couldn’t help but see this selection by Channel 4 as a hefty bit of trolling from the broadcaster, as many worried they were foreshadowing England’s fate tonight.
Let’s hope the result is not as disastrous as the real-life Titanic – a much-hyped luxury cruise ship which famously sank, killing at least 1,500 people.
The film sees Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio appear as star-crossed lovers on the ship before it collides with an iceberg and they end up marooned in the ocean clutching onto a wooden plank. Spoiler: it doesn’t end well.
‘Channel 4 showing Titanic when the Euros final is on is trolling I can respect,’ commented @ShanghaiHannah on X.
‘So tomorrow evening when ITV and BBC are showing England in the Euro 2024 final, Channel 4 are showing Titanic !! D’you think they’re jealous or is there a subtle prediction here??’ asked an amused @BillPitwood.
Meanwhile, fan @roguez9 was feeling a little more nervous at what such a film could mean for , and wrote: ‘Channel 4 testing all levels of banter by showing Titanic at the same time as the final tonight 😬.’
Elsewhere, BBC Two is screening Wimbledon – the mixed doubles final – with coverage switching over from BBC One at 6.20 ahead of the Euros coverage.
Just after half-time at 9pm BBC Two will then show The Turkish Detective, which is about the murder of a rap music manager. Nice and unrelated.
Over on Channel 5 the disaster theme continues though, as it is showing a documentary about The Great Storm of 1987 at 7.25pm.
Strangely, Titanic is also being aired on Spanish television channel tonight at 10pm – which is an hour into the game there with the time difference.
Clearly, although today the two countries are in fierce opposition, we have the same sense of humour… It’s coming home!
BBC One is screening the Euro 2024 final from 6.30 pm to 10.40 pm. ITV1’s coverage runs from 6.30 pm to 10.00 pm
