’s first attempt at voicing Mario for the new Mario Bros movie didn’t exactly go well as he was likened to Tony Soprano.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star voices, where he stars alongside Always Sunny icon as Luigi.

Now the Parks and Rec actor says they hit some minor bumps in the road when first finding Mario’s voice, recalling bosses told him his voice was ‘a little New Jersey.’

Eventually the actors and bosses ‘landed on something they liked,’ and audio recording began for the film.

Chris was announced as the voice of the world’s most famous plumber in September 2021, and reaction from fans and critics was mixed to say the least – especially .

Instead, Chris’ version of Mario is of a struggling plumber from Brooklyn, New York, who is transported to the magical Mushroom Kingdom to save his brother Luigi.

The film boasts a major cast of celebrities, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key.

Speaking about the reaction to his role, Chris said: Oh, I totally get it, man. There’s a passionate fan base and I’m one of the fans. I get it.’
