Amy Schumer can blame comedian Phil Wang for one of her jokes at the Oscars 2022 as he helped her write one about (and it was a pretty good one).
Shortly before, Amy, 40, made a quip about Smith’s nominated movie King Richard, for which he would later win best actor in a leading role.
King Richard sees Smith, 53, playing Richard Williams, the real life father of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams.
‘I sent a few jokes to Amy and she ended up using one of them,’ star Phil revealed on the Chrissie, Sam and Browny podcast.
Recalling his joke which Amy delivered at the Oscars on Sunday, he said: ‘It was, “it’s inspirational isn’t it that after years of Hollywood ignoring women’s stories we finally get a movie about the incredible Williams’ sisters’… dad”.’
Phil also quipped that Smith laughed at the joke ‘for the last time in his life’, referencing the Scan**l that has unfolded since the Fresh Prince of Bel Air actor smacked Chris Rock across the face on stage for joking about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
When the podcast hosts asked if Phil got paid for every joke of his that was used by Amy, he joked: ‘Yeah, I’m a multi-millionaire. No, I think the whole thing is unpaid, you don’t even get paid to host. It’s just the honour of it.’
He’s somewhat right as Amy’s Oscars co-host Wanda Sykes recently revealed that she wasn’t being paid much for the awards, and was likely receiving scale, which is the basic minimum rates established by the SAG-AFTRA union.
Phil, who is currently taking part in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in Australia, was previously president of Footlights, a drama club in Cambridge, and is perhaps best known as a member of the sketch comedy group Daphne.
He has made appearances on several comedy TV shows in the UK, including Taskmaster, Have I Got News For You, 8 Out of 10 Cats, The Rob Brydon Show and Would I Lie To You.
He is due to begin a tour of North America next month.
