In what would turn out to be a pretty costly mistake, the sampled ’s hit 1983 track Every Breath You Take in his 1997 song I’ll Be Missing You.

In a resurfaced clip from a 2018 interview with The Breakfast Club, the former Police frontman admitted that the I Need A Girl rapper pays him $2,000 per day in royalties.

In the video, which is again circulating on Twitter, the host asked Sting, ‘Is it true that Diddy has to pay you $2k a day because he didn’t have permission to sample Every Breath You Take?’, to which Sting simply responded, ‘Yeah, for the rest of his life’.

‘We’re very good friends now,’ the added, much to the amusement of the interviewers.

But on seeing the video yesterday, Diddy thought he’d clear a few things up, as he wrote: ‘Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother@OfficialSting!’

That’s $1.8million a year (£1.4million) – ouch.
