You normally need to pay to play online games on the PS4 and PS5, but is that true for free-to-play titles like Warzone?
Ever since the start of the PlayStation 4 era Sony has been, by subscribing to PlayStation Plus.
However, with the rise of free-to-play games on consoles that created a problem, where you still needed to pay to play games that were supposed to be free.
That’s left some people confused as to whether games like Warzone still require a paid subscription, but thankfully the situation is fairly straightforward.
Do you need PS Plus to play Call Of Duty: Warzone?
In the last couple of years, both Microsoft and Sony have changed their position on free-to-play game and you can now play online games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends without the need for PS Plus.
So no, you’re not required to have PS Plus to play with friends on Warzone.
That’s not true for paid-for games though, so, for example, does require that you have a PS Plus subscription before you can play online.
Why did Call Of Duty: Warzone stop needing PS Plus?
So why did Sony (and Microsoft) allow for their non-subscribed users to begin playing free-to-play games online? Well, it’s not as complicated as you might think.
If you were imagining the Countdown clock noise and came to the conclusion that the answer is money, then you’re the winner of this week’s teapot.
With so many free-to-play games making their way onto consoles, it only made sense to make the games available for everyone to play. Especially with all these games having microtransactions that console manufacturers can take their cut from, which is even more lucrative than the subscriptions.
