fans love to latch onto any clue they can when it comes to speculation over the show – and a new photo of and has proven no different.
On Sunday, ahead of the Bafta TV Awards, it was officially announced that star Ncuti , taking over the role from Jodie Whittaker.
Having kept his involvement a secret since February, the 29-year-old said in a statement: ‘There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.’
When the news was finally out, Ncuti posed up a storm on the Baftas red carpet, with one photo showing him holding hands with Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola.
Sharing the picture on his Instagram Story, the actor captioned it: ‘A pair of dolls,’ alongside emojis to represent themselves as well as a suspicious eyes emoji next to Nicola’s name.
While it could just be an innocent photo, some Whovians have interpreted it as a possible sign that he could be hinting at the 14th Doctor’s new companion.
‘That could be sooooo cool omg I love Nicola so much,’ one person tweeted, while another wrote: ‘PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. It would be AMAZING.’
Someone else commented: ‘I will scream from the rooftops Nicola is all I need ever,’ as another added: ‘Is there a petition or something I can sign??’
While some seemed dubious that Nicola could be the Doctor’s companion, one person put: ‘I think it’s unlikely but if it’s true I’M WHOLEHEARTEDLY IN.’
Nonetheless, the outpouring of fan support shows that Nicola would be a very popular choice, as one fan remarked dramatically: ‘I would literally die no word of a lie,’ as another chimed in to say: ‘If this is true then a thousand times yes.’
When Ncuti was announced as the new Doctor, he emphasised just how much the character meant to him, while paying homage to the actors who had come before him.
‘This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,’ he said.
‘I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.’
