Not only are David Tennant and Catherine Tate , Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney is joining the cast of the beloved sci-fi…as a character named Rose.

Yep, you read that right.

The actress, who in the Netflix romance, is filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary.

Yasmin said of the news: ‘If anyone would have told 8 year old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them.

‘This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.’

Sensing our confusion about the whole Rose thing, returning showrunner Russell T Davies added: ‘Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?

‘You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!’

For the uninitiated, in 2005, Billie Piper crashed onto our screens as the iconic Rose Tyler, alongside Christopher Ecclestone’s Ninth Doctor.

She stayed on for a series of David Tennant’s reign as the 10th Doctor, before the pair were , one of the most heartbreaking episodes in the show’s history.

It’s not the only announcement we’ve had this week.

Yasmin’s casting comes just a day after it was revealed that David and Catherine Tate (who played Donna Noble) are returning to the show for the 60th anniversary.

Catherine last starred as Donna in series four, with her memories of the Doctor and their travels in the Tardis being wiped at the end of her story.

Meanwhile, David last returned 10 years ago for the 50th anniversary.

Russell announced the huge news, writing: ‘THEY’RE BACK! The Doctor and Donna! But… how?! He wiped her memory! If she remembers, she’ll die!

‘But, but… is it a flashback? A dream sequence? A lie? A fantasy? A parallel universe?! Alt Doctor? The Land of Fiction?! You’ll find out in 2023 as Doctor Who hits its 60th – diamond! – anniversary! ♥️♥️➕? @bbcdoctorwho.’

In an official statement on the Doctor Who website, Russell added: ‘They’re back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?

‘Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.

‘The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.’

That’s all alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s . He’ll take on the role in autumn, after Jodie Whittaker steps down.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One in autumn.
