Lydia previously worked with Russell on the , which followed three gay men who move to London during the Aids pandemic.

She added to Radio Times: ‘When I got the scripts for It’s a Sin, I read them and I was in tears, and desperate to be part of the story. I already knew Russell [T Davies] from Years and Years, and when I read the role of Jill, I thought, “Whoever gets this character is so lucky.”

‘It surprised me to learn what the 1980s were like: I was horrified and appalled by the discrimination people with HIV faced, and the adversity they had to overcome.

‘I didn’t expect to get nominated for a Bafta for it! I trained at Identity, a part-time drama school in Brixton, south London, which specialises in minority students. I used to think it was a disadvantage not going to traditional drama school, but there is a place, now, in film and TV for people with real-life experiences. When I watch TV I want to see people I know being represented. People like me.’

Jodie previously confirmed she’s filmed her regeneration scene, saying on the Graham Norton Show: ‘They are never going to tell me who it is.

‘We filmed some scenes, but the new Doctor wasn’t there. I wasn’t there for Peter (Capaldi), and I only met him months later when I passed him in the street!’
