Now, it’s been speculated there is another change set to thrill fans – the potential return of a Christmas Day episode in 2023.
While the show has aired New Year’s Day specials in recent years, fans have been missing the traditional episode, which hasn’t aired since 2017.
It’s now believed it’s possible that Ncuti’s run as The Doctor could mark the return of these beloved yearly instalments.
According to , there are thought to be internal talks taking place about whether the show could make a return to the coveted slot.
The outlet reports that there is speculation of ongoing discussions between the Doctor Who production team – headed up by Russell – and BBC bosses.
While there is currently no confirmation of whether talks have been taking place, we would absolutely love to see it happen.
There’s already been a huge amount of love in response to Ncuti’s casting, with , Neil Patrick Harris and Christopher Eccleston singing his praises.
Screenwriter Russell previously said was a ‘spectacular operation’, and the reveal took ‘a hell of a lot of planning’.
‘The fact that we had to do all this in secret meant we were rattling with tension,’ he said in the Production Notes column of Doctor Who magazine.
‘Not only had Ncuti’s name not been L***ed, but he hadn’t even been guessed.
‘His casting had been locked away, since February, with all of us worrying that it would be spoiled, any day now.
‘But it worked. It absolutely worked.’
