You’ve beaten Margit but now you need to face ’s next major boss, Godrick.
Elden Ring’s first two major can be a massive turn-off for a lot of new players. Developer FromSoftware has always made their initial boss fights extra difficult but if you can best them you’ll be ready for the rest of the game.
Godrick is no different, as it introduces the concept of phases more explicitly than Margit, as instead of just pulling out a new hammer he gets very creative with a dead dragon’s head – just as you think you’re starting to get the better of him.
However, beating Godrick is actually much easier than Margit, as long as you use all the tools at your disposal.
How to beat Godrick – phase one
Phase one of the boss fight will involve you learning the patterns that Godrick attacks in, as those powerful axe swings will quickly annihilate you if you’re not careful.
The thing you need to avoid doing is rolling away from the bosses. Once Godrick has finished his combo, rolling into him will let you get ready to unleash your attacks.
Godrick will routinely swing and then hold for a moment, almost as if he’s out of breath. The thing to do here is quickly get in a few stabs before he swings wildly again.
His most annoying move is the whirlwind that he can conjure up. This is the only time you want to roll away, as the brief invincibility that rolling gives you will wear off way before you’re ready to attack.
The thing to do here is move out of the way and wait for him to leap into the air. This is where you don’t want to roll away but into him. He’ll be very – emphasis on the very – briefly winded, so begin attacking him until he moves again.
Another move he can do in this phase is grab you, however the move is so slow that rolling out the way is easy to do.
Once you’ve whittled down his health to halfway, he’ll look like he’s about to do a mighty swing and crush you, but a cut scene will show what he actually has in mind.
How to beat Godrick – phase two
If you discovered Roderika in the Stormhill Shack, you’ll have been told about how the people in the Lands Between have begun ‘grafting’. This generally involves characters attaching other people’s limbs and heads to their body, but Godrick doesn’t limit himself to humans.
So be prepared, as Godrick will now come at you with a dragon’s head attached to his arm.
Godrick will spray fire around in a wide semi-circle, which needs to be avoided at all costs. While dodging into regular attacks is fine, the fire spreads in a way that it doesn’t extinguish quickly. So, while rolling into the fire won’t hurt you straight away, once the invincibility wears off you’ll be burnt to a crisp.
If you’re quick, you might avoid this by running behind Godrick. However, this will put you in range of being grabbed by the dragon’s mouth.
If Godrick grabs you he will try to incinerate you. The attack does no damage once the head chomps down on you, but once he slams you into the ground and breathes fire, you’ll need to make sure you’re quick to heal.
Another attack is his more direct fire breathing. Godrick will stand in one place and aim straight for you, and it is at this point you need to run to his side to get your attacks in. He can’t do anything until the dragon has stopped breathing fire, so keep your eye on that too.
Godrick can still attack as normal, but is more likely to use the dragon’s head in this phase. However, he will introduce a new move where he slams his axe into the ground, causing an earthquake. This is easily dodged out of, but if you roll into it towards the end of its animation, you can once again land a few sneaky attacks.
Another move that Godrick will begin doing as you weaken him is raining fire down onto you. These fireballs will explode on impact, so dodge out of the way.
Keep whittling away at him and you’ll get Remembrance of the Grafted. You can trade this in at the Roundtable Hold to Enia, rewarding you with either a replica of Godrick’s axe or the ability to summon the dragon’s head as a personal flamethrower.
