Frame-rateIn a bizarre online rant, David Jaffe, director on the original God Of War, has blamed poor management for the delay of Bethesda’s Starfield.
As disappointing as it was, few people will have been surprised at the news that Bethesda’s new sci-fi game from this Christmas until sometime in the first half of next year.
Bethesda games (in fact, most games at the moment) almost always get delayed at least once and yet former Sony developer David Jaffe, best known for helping to create the Twisted Metal and God Of War franchises, has specifically blamed boss Phil Spencer.
Jaffe’s YouTube rant begins reasonably enough, as Jaffe reiterates common concerns that Microsoft has acquired too many developers too quickly and is having trouble integrating them into its company structure and managing their release schedules.
As pointed out by a recently, Spencer has been in charge of Xbox for eight years now and there have been relatively few critically acclaimed first party titles in that time – and even then many have suffered development problems.
Jaffe takes particular umbrage with Halo Infinite, which certainly has been an increasing , and argues that Spencer is taking on too many responsibilities and is getting ‘in his own way’.
It’s unclear how much day-to-day control Spencer maintains over individual projects, but while Jaffe describes him as a ‘visionary’, for instituting Game Pass, by the end of the video he claims that Spencer ‘sucks’ and begins insulting Xbox fans as well.
By the end it becomes impossible to agree with anything Jaffe is saying, especially when he starts talking about how angry he is that Spencer blocked him on Twitter.
As a result, it’s certainly Jaffe that comes out looking the worst, even if it does highlight concerns about how Microsoft is managing its increasingly unwieldy number of first party studios.
