A reader is frustrated with the lack of updates for Halo Infinite and insists that 343 Industries should never be allowed to make another game.
had a good year last year, probably their first good year since the Xbox 360 era. Game Pass grabbed people’s attention and it feels like, in my friend group at least, as if it became a major talking point and reason to own an Xbox. By the end of the end year Sony had nothing new to release and yet Microsoft had the excellent Forza Horizon 5 and , both of which reviewed well.
Halo Infinite was a welcome relief because developer 343 Industries have been a bit of a disaster ever since they took over the franchise and the game being delayed by a year, after that laughable Craig the Brute preview, was not a good sign. But to many people’s surprise it managed to get out on time though, and it was actually really good.
The campaign was a bit weird, and it was obvious it must’ve been edited down and changed a lot from what was originally planned, but it was okay. The important thing is that the multiplayer was great, really good and making it free-to-play was a genius idea. For the time I would say it was probably my favourite game of last year but there was a problem in that there was not much content, so it did depend on what they did with it post-launch. And now we know exactly what they’ve done: nothing.
I’m not even going to mention Forge and campaign co-op, which weren’t there at launch and we still have no idea about, but simply the fact that almost nothing of any importance has been added to the multiplayer since it first came out.
It’s not just that there’s not enough new content but they haven’t been fixing bugs either. Tons of weapons need rebalancing, the playlists need refreshing, and the cheater problem – which was there from literally the beta – is only getting worse.
I think people that don’t play it a lot probably don’t realise that it doesn’t even have a roadmap, so we don’t have anything to look forward to or any way to know when something hasn’t been delivered.
We basically know nothing and the lack of communication from 343, beyond endless apologies and excuses, is almost the worst part. The whole thing is just run terrible and would embarrass a two-man indie studio, let alone the biggest developer of the richest company in the world.
It’s so frustrating, because Halo Infinite is easily the best game 343 has made since they took over, and the best overall entry since Halo 3. But it’s just being left to die and frankly I’ve had enough of the waiting – and I think a lot of other people have. The news that, on PC, is no surprise to me and I predict that Infinite will very quickly become irrelevant and forgotten.
It’s a terrible waste and by all rights it should be the last chance for 343. They’ve messed up every game since they took over and while it seems some of the fault is Microsoft’s management something’s got to change. Because at this rate, the track record of 343 literally guarantees that Halo Infinite 2 will be another failure.
As far as I’m concerned they should be taken off the franchise and if Microsoft has missed their chance to buy Bungie they need to get in someone else, perhaps Certain Affinity, to take over. Anyone that can not only deliver a great game but keep it great.
