Heather Joan Graham was born to Joan and James Graham on January 29, 1970, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father used to work for the FBI and is now retired, and her mother is a writer and a teacher.
Graham and her sister Aimee grew up together (also an actress). She moved around a lot with her parents and sister before moving to California when she was nine years old.
She went to Agoura High School, where she was chosen as the “Most Talented” student. She went to the University of California, Los Angeles, after high school and studied English there for two years. After this, Graham dropped out of school to focus on acting full-time.

Graham’s first movie role was a cameo in Mrs. Soffel, which didn’t get him any credit (1984).
Student Exchange was the first movie for which she was given credit. In 1986, she was on an episode of the NBC game show Scrabble called “Teen Week.”
Then, in 1987, she was in several TV commercials and an episode of the sitcom Growing Pains. In the 1988 movie License to Drive, starring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, she played Mercedes Lane, a popular girl who falls in love with Haim’s character. This was her first big role.

Her first big break came from her performance, which also got her nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She turned down a regular part on a soap opera and a three-picture deal with a big studio because she thought they would limit her.
