Hit gameshow’s return date on ITV revealed after nearly 30 years off air

In February, it was announced the classic programme, which remains to this day one of the most-viewed gameshows on American TV, was being revived by the broadcaster.

While Stateside Jeopardy! has broadcast over 8,000 episodes since its first broadcast in 1964, in the UK it has not been on screens since it aired on Channel 4, ITV, and Sky One between 1983 and 1996.

However, ITV missed one crucial detail in the announcement: when to expect Jeopardy!’s comeback.

Now, though, the Big Brother network has stated the shiny new version of the gameshow will debut on New Year’s Day on ITV1 and ITVX at 5.45pm.

It will then continue weekdays at 4pm, with at least 20 episodes reportedly filmed and planned.

Jeopardy! sees players presented with clues in the form of answers and must phrase their responses in the form of a question.

Once reaching the final, hopefuls have the chance to win big cash prizes, with some contestants winning millions across several Jeopardy! episodes.

However, Stephen, who has recently recovered after falling off a stage and , previously promised the ITV reboot would have a ‘modern twist’.

He said: ‘In the United States, Jeopardy! is a phenomenon like no other. Whenever I’m in America, I do my damnedest to catch it every weekday.’

The former Q.I. host continued, saying to viewers: ‘The idea of hosting it here in the UK makes me dizzy with delight.’

‘Such a dedicated quizzing nation as ours will, I hope, welcome this uniquely beguiling and endlessly rewarding game.’

 Jeopardy! was famously hosted by the late Alex Trebek for more than 35 years between 1984 and his death in 2020 at the age of 80.

It’s not the only show to have been rebooted of late, with Big Brother recently returning to ITV, while Gladiators will be coming back to the BBC in 2024.

Jeopardy! premieres on New Year’s Day on ITV1 and ITVX at 5.45pm.
