House of the Dragon’s Emma D’Arcy was convinced Game Of Thrones prequel was ‘some spoof version’ before audition

star admitted they had never seen Game of Thrones before and thought the upcoming prequel was just ‘some spoof version.

The 30-year-old actor, who’s playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the fantasy drama which also stars Matt Smith, , and .

It’s been three years since the  of the original show aired, however Emma didn’t realise the extent of its phenomenon.

Reflecting on their House of the Dragon audition, they said: ‘Everyone else managed to work it out; I remained very naïve. Everyone’s making fantasy series these days, so I just thought it was some spoof version.’

‘I didn’t realise until I was asked to send in another audition tape,’ they added to .

Emma also shared that if they had ‘personal investment, to the multi-award-winning serial drama they wouldn’t have ‘held my nerve honestly.’

Reflecting on their character in a new interview, Emma who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, says the character of the tough, dragon-riding daughter of the king felt ‘truthful’ to their own identity.

‘I’ve always found myself both pulled and repelled by masculine and feminine identity and I think that plays out truthfully here,’ she told the .

Emma’s character Rhaenyra is the first-born child and therefore, traditionally, the natural successor to the Iron Throne.

The eagerly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel will see fans for the first time since the acclaimed HBO series came to an end in 2019.

The prequel will be the first in â€“ including one focused on  â€“ offering a deeper dive into the history and mythology of Martin’s creation.
