Later today, the Rocketman himself will be headlining the music festival for the very first time, alongside him (one of whom is heavily rumoured to be a certain Toxic-singing ).
On Saturday, singer Rina, whose debut album Sawayama came out three years ago to critical acclaim, at the event.
The artist, 32, wowed the crowds with her ethereal performance, while also seemingly while expressing her anger over ‘microaggressions’ that she’s experienced.
On Sunday, hours before Sir Elton’s headline set was due to take place, a soundcheck took place on the stage, which was seemingly overheard by a BBC music correspondent.
The journalist in question, Mark Savage, tweeted: ‘Elton John’s team just performed a soundcheck at Glastonbury. As one mic was being tested, a member of the crew said: “One, two, one two. Rina mic, one, two.’
He added: ‘So is that @rinasawayama confirmed for the Pyramid Stage tonight?’
One person reacted to Mark’s tweet: ‘Oops if they’ve let that one slip.’
‘Excellent detective work!’ someone else said, while another added: ‘Yeah that almost certainly means she’s performing. Don’t they have a song together so it would make sense.’
Sir Elton expressed his public support for Rina in July 2020, when she tweeted about being ineligible to be nominated for major British music awards due to the fact that she did not have British citizenship despite having lived in the UK for years, with the British Phonographic Industry later changing its rules on eligibility.
The Tiny Dancer singer of Rina on Instagram at the time, writing in the caption: ‘I’m happy to hear that the @bpi are reviewing the rules that led to Rina Sawayama’s well-deserved album being snubbed from this year’s @mercuryprize list of nominees.
