Those familiar with the hit Sex Education must have wondered how everyone involved keeps a straight face during those scenes, well intimacy coordinator David Thackery revealed that its usually the people off camera that cause the disruption.
The much-loved show is never shy about pushing the boundaries of sexual representation, with teenage angst and dreams acting as the beating heart of the binge-worthy series, we can’t help but feel some of the more seductive scenarios might get awkward on set
Creator Laurie Nunn has been clear that of the story for the beloved cast.
‘It’s the end as we know it,’ she told Netflix Tudum, much to the disappointment of viewers, who are hoping the show .
She added: ‘During that process, it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it.’
While the sex scenes in the final outing weren’t as daring compared to the previous, choreographer David -who has also worked on the hit Netflix series Heartstopper- revealed the process behind the wild scenes we’ve witnessed over the years.
‘If anything embarrassing is happening is mostly coming from me to be honest with you,’ he told us.
‘There’s moments where I have to call out a few things where the director would be like ‘can you call out the levels of tension.’ I’d call out a level four which was a certain rhythm and if we reached level eight, the climax if you will and if you take away the music you could hear me shouting.
‘Guess the embarrassment sits with me.
‘I’ve worked with them to get them to a point of confidence and comfort, I had moments of having to throw a condom across the camera which was pretty funny.’
Several Sex Education previously they won’t even be back for season four, with Tanya Reynolds, Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison and Rakhee Thakrar all bowing out.
However, season four delivered with Schitt’s Creek icon Dan Levy joining the series as Maeve’s Ivy League tutor Thomas Molly.
We imagine that the cast and crew have developeda strong and somewhat unique bond over the years however, choreographer David – who has been working on the show since series two – revealed who he enjoyed working with the most.
‘I think Asa,’ he confessed.
‘He is a joy on and off screen. So professional so kind and very clear. He was just let’s try this and this might work so he was great.’
Most of the characters this season have a satisfying end to their story, with Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) deciding he wants to a pastor Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) returning back to the US to complete her writing course.
The finale was filled with so many highlights, but there was one key moment that stood out for David.
He said: ‘Definitely the sex scene for Maeve and Otis and working on the opening again. I just enjoy those moments, even though the opening montage wasn’t as much, but when I read that there’s a dog humping a ball I was like “how am I going to do that? do I need to be a part of that?”‘
