has delivered the news there won’t be any more of her brilliant coming-of-age drama, after two much-loved seasons.
After debuting on our screens in 2018, comedy-drama In My Skin gained a loyal fanbase and ran for two brilliant series on the .
It focuses on Welsh teenager Bethan (Gabrielle Creevy) who is trying to live a double life as she negotiates , friendships and sexuality, and was met with rave reviews.
For her work on the gloriously poignant series, creator Kayleigh has recently been nominated for a Bafta Craft Award for best drama writer.
However, despite the piece of work being critically acclaimed, there won’t be anymore from In My Skin to come in the future.
‘That’s the finished article now, there won’t be any more In My Skin, sadly,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘I hoped that it would become what it was, it was always intended to be two series because it’s a true story as well.
‘Right at the conception of the idea, I knew where the series as a whole would end – but at every point, you’re just praying that you get to finish the story.’
The programme was initially picked up for a pilot before being green-lit for further episodes.
She continued: ‘In my head, I had to think “Well, there’s a world where this is only ever a half an hour pilot”. We knew that the pilot would be televised, but nothing else was guaranteed.
‘So I was like, “Well, if I don’t get to tell the whole story as I envisage it, let me just at least try and make the pilot something that I can be proud of,” Kayleigh explained.
‘I just viewed the pilot as being a slice of something, and then we got commissioned to do a further four episodes and again, I said, “Okay, well, there’s a world where we don’t get series two, so make these four episodes count. It’s been like that the whole way through. But thank God, we got to tell the whole story.’
But don’t worry, the writer has lots more coming up for fans of her work to enjoy
She’s soon taking on a book adaptation from the novel Dreamland by Rosa Rankin-Gee and added: ‘I have another original project set in Wales again, another homegrown thing. That’s for Channel 4 and that’s gonna keep me occupied for quite a while…’
Despite not being able to give anything away, Kayleigh said: ‘I approached [Channel 4]. I’ve had this idea for a long time and had already pitched it to Nerys Evans, who makes In My Skin.
‘It was probably four years ago now, and I said, “This is the thing I want to do next, but when the time was right, and with the right team,” and we started Channel Four was the right home for it.
In the best drama writer category, Kayleigh’s up alongside Jack Thorne for one-off Help, Russell T. Davies for It’s A Sin and Jesse Armstrong for Succession.
Reacting to receiving her nomination, the creative shared: ‘It was one of those pinch-yourself moments because the three other writers who I’m up against, sincerely wrote my favourite shows of the year!
‘People always go, “Oh, it’s just an honour to be nominated,” But actually, in my mind, they’re like the three Titans of the TV world, three of the most famous writers in the world, let alone the UK
‘To be in that lineup was really flattering and wonderful.’
The 2022 British Academy Television Craft Awards will take place on Sunday 24 April and the Virgin Media BAFTA Television Awards will take place 8th May
In My Skin can be streamed in full on BBC iPlayer.
