Jane Birkin has died at the age of 76.
The English-French icon started her career as an actress and was also known for her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg.
They met in 1969 when they co-starred in French comedy Slogan and released a joint album that same year.
Birkin and Gainsbourg eventually split in 1980.
On Sunday, Birkin was found at her home by her caregiver, .
Born and raised in London, Birkin moved to Paris in 1968 and released 14 albums throughout her career.
She called Paris home for the rest of her life.
In 1965, Birkin married composer John Barry and the pair welcomed a daughter, the late photographer Kate Barry.
Birkin and Barry’s marriage ended in 1968.
Birkin and Gainsbourg were together for 12 years. They never married but in 1971 had a daughter, actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.
In 1982 Birkin welcomed her third daughter, Lou Doillon, who she shares with director Jacques Doillon.
Birkin was also romantically involved with the French writer Olivier Rolin later in her life.
The late star’s world-famous, namesake bag was the result of a chance encounter with Jean-Louis Dumas, Hermès’ chief executive, on a flight from Paris to London in 1981.
Birkin told Dumas how she hadn’t been able to find a bag that suited her needs as a mum of two, so Dumas designed her a handbag on the spot.
Tragically, in 2013, Birkin’s oldest daughter Barry died when she fell out of the window of her Paris flat.
She was only 46 at the time.
Birkin previously said of Barry: ‘My eldest daughter, Kate, looks most like me. She’s a photographer.
‘She had a Polaroid camera in her hand from a young age and photographed her sisters all the time.’
Last year, Birkin toured her album Oh! Pardon tu dormais and was set to play more shows this summer.
