Jason Manford has hit out at the BBC for axing his sitcom Scarborough, which aired for one series in 2019.
The comedian starred in the series alongside but it was not renewed for a second run.
However, Jason is not ruling out the possibility that it might return one day.
star, 40, played Mike in the drama, which followed a group of friends who enjoy meeting up for karaoke in a pub within a seaside resort.
He stars alongside Claire Sweeney and Jake Canuso, with Jason claiming the decision to scrap the show was ‘wrong.’
‘I still think it was the wrong decision. Someone makes those decisions in an office somewhere,’ he told the .
Teasing a possible return of the show, the comic added: ‘Nothing’s ever dead [though].’
At the time of its axe, the move was met with controversy, as fans branded it ‘classist’ since the show had been adopted as a ‘working-class’ sitcom with a middle-aged audience.
Back in 2020, Jason told Radio Times that he was disappointed by the decision not to recommission the series, saying he had ‘great fun’ filming the project which ‘a lot of people’ enjoyed.
‘It’s disappointing because I think it served a core demographic audience that’s often forgotten, which is middle-aged, working-class people who don’t always get TV made for them,’ he said.
‘I thought it had a Last of the Summer Wine feel to it.’
Scarborough was created and written by Derren Litten, who was also behind ITV favourite, Benidorm.
Jason most recently , which saw a Cher impersonator take home £50,00.
He is now gearing up for his return to the stage for his first tour since lockdown lifted.
Titled Like Me, the tour will see Jason perform in venues across the UK, including places like Blackpool, Dublin and Cardiff.
He’ll tour over the coming months and says it’s a ‘joy’ to be performing again after the pandemic forced theatres to close.
