John Goodman has no regrets about defending his longtime friend and co-star Roseanne Barr after she was accused of sending a racist tweet.Â
in 2018 and faced a of criticism after she compared advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ‘ape’ in a Twitter post.Â
The actress later claimed the tweet was written while she was on Ambien and that she had no idea Jarrett was Black.
Goodman, 71, who famously played Roseanne’s husband Dan in the long-running sitcom, rushed to her defence and insisted his friend was ‘not a racist.’
Now five years later, the actor has no regrets about publicly backing his co-star and felt the backlash she received was unwarranted.
When asked if he regretted defending her, : ‘No. I remember attending some kind of junket where they saw the pilot, and then the interviews, and it just turned into an attack.
‘’It made me really uncomfortable witnessing them go after Roseanne.
‘Yeah, I felt bad for her. And then, yeah… I just feel terrible about the whole thing. You know, we had a great time. And I love her. She’s just her own person.’
Roseanne was cancelled soon after the Scan**l and rebooted as The Conners without her in the cast but Goodman hasn’t ruled out working with her again.
The Big Lebowski actor had previously told The Sunday Times that he was ‘surprised at the response’ and ‘[knew] for a fact that she’s not a racist.’
Earlier this year, Barr reflected on the controversy and claimed she was subjected to ‘witch-burning’, while accusing ABC of wanting her to take her own life.
The comic said: ‘It was a witch-burning. They denied me the right to apologise. Oh my God, they just hated me so badly.
‘I had never known that they hated me like that. They hate me because I have talent, because I have an opinion.’
She continued to the LA Times: ‘Even though ‘Roseanne’ became their Number one show, they’d rather not have a number one show … When they Ki**ed my character off, that was a message to me – knowing that I’m mentally ill or have mental health issues – that they did want me to commit suicide.’
