has and not everyone is best pleased with the finale.
This is your final spoiler warning if you haven’t seen it!
After four seasons of yearning looks , Villanelle () and Eve ()’s relationship finally happened, with the pair sharing passionate kisses and giving into their feelings.
However, it wasn’t long for this world as, shortly after the pair discovered The Twelve’s whereabouts and confronted them, Villanelle was shot in the back, with the pair plunging into the Thames…the end.
Safe to say, people are not too happy about it. Some have argued that the ending made no sense for the characters, while others were shocked to see the controversial ‘bury your gays’ trope in a series that once seemed like it would champion LGBT romance.
Before the finale aired, Metro.co.uk chatted to boss Laura Neal about what would happen if she faced backlash for her finale, with the writer insisting it’s ‘impossible to please everyone’.
‘I think with a show like this, that generates so much discussion and that also generates so much debate, you’re never going to be able to please everybody,’ she said.
‘And that’s part of what makes the show great as well. I’m braced for us not being able to please everybody but I’m really delighted with the ending. I know our actors are delighted with the ending, and I hope that, even if they don’t agree with it, I hope fans will see how much love we put into the ending.’
Laura went on to explain that Jodie and Sandra ‘have been involved in discussions about the ending as we’re having them.’
‘They’ve been in the loop from the moment this ending was first discussed,’ she added.
As for what she hopes fans most take away from the show, Laura went on: ‘I hope that they think we’ve done the show and those two characters justice – that’s all I hope.’
Over the years, the series – a marketing technique in which creators hint at, but do not actually depict, LGBT representation, or a same-sex relationship.
Finally, albeit in the last episode, that relationship was finally shown.
‘I think it was important to explore every facet of their relationship for the final season,’ Laura explained.
‘I don’t think anyone can deny that there’s this charge between the two characters. And what I love about the show is everyone interprets that charge differently.
‘Some people read it romantically, some people read it sexually, some people read it platonically, and some people read it cosmically.
‘I think all of these things are valid readings of that relationship so we just wanted to explore some of those facets without coming down on one side or another definitively.’
Season four is the show’s final run but Laura also admitted she’d ‘love’ to see the story continued in a spin-off, or a movie – similar to Peaky Blinders.
‘I would happily live in the Killing Eve world forever and ever and ever, I love these characters and these stories,’ she confessed.
‘I don’t know if there’s going to be anything else in that world, I don’t have the answer to that, but I would love to see it.’
Killing Eve is available for catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
