is set to star in the first non-binary love scene of her career in the Queer As Folk reboot, meaning the person she has sex with does not identify as either male or female.

The Sex And The City actress, 65, is best known for playing Samantha in the series, but now she’s taken on the role of Brenda in the revival of Russell T Davies’ iconic 90s show.

Queer As Folk follows the lives of three gay friends living in and Brenda is one of their mothers.

Discussing her character’s storyline, director Stephen Dunn said it will ‘take a fun turn’ as her friendship with other queer characters ‘become sexual.’

Speaking to Attitude about Kim’s character, Stephen began: ‘I wrote the role only dreaming of being able to cast her. She’s an incredible improvisor.

‘She added the line at the end of her scene in episode seven, “Can I say bottoms?”, in response to her learning what is ok and not in this new queer friendship that she’s establishing.’

He continued: ‘It becomes sexual, but it didn’t start that way. She was so dialled into the character’s learning curve around queerness.’

Ryan O’Connell plays Brenda’s son, Julian, in the show, and he described the last four episodes as ‘insane’, echoing that ‘Kim’s storyline takes really fun turns.’

‘Get ready,’ he teased viewers.

The first non-binary scene of Kim’s career was assisted by an intimacy coach, a role that has become increasingly more present on film sets in recent years to ensure portrayals of intimacy are accurate and safe for actors.

Filming for the Queer As Folk reboot wrapped back in March, after the show was brought back to life for Peacock by the Doctor Who show-runner.

The show originally aired in 1999 and ran for two seasons, acquiring a loyal fanbase.

It aired on Channel 4 until 2000 and was groundbreaking for its time, with the Emmy-nominated writer feeling super proud to be bringing it back.

Russell – who serves as an executive producer on the reboot – said in a statement that, while he was ‘proud of what we achieved in 1999, that was a millennium ago.’

‘As a community, we’ve radicalised, explored, opened up, and found new worlds – with new enemies and new allies – and there was so much to be said. Stephen pitched a brand new version of Queer as Folk with so much imagination, insight, and crucially, joy, that I simply couldn’t resist,’ he said in a statement.

‘The 2022 show is more diverse, more wild, more free, more angry – everything a queer show should be.’

As for Canadian actress Kim, she was , titled And Just Like That.

However, it will be music to fans’ ears to hear that of the reboot. Well, sort of.

Kim was a fan favourite from 1998 to 2004, when she played the outlandish, sex-positive PR professional known for her killer wisecracks and über confident demeanour.

While she declined the offer to feature in the eagerly-awaited revival, and certainly won’t be forgotten in the next instalment.

Queer As Folk airs on Peacock on June 9.
