Return of the Jedi will be 40 years old this May and Lego is marking the event with a new X-wing model and two new dioramas.
May 25, 1983 saw the end of the original trilogy and since that means it’ll be 40 years old this year there are lots of plans to celebrate its milestone birthday, including from Lego.
Two new diorama sets will be released, that are aimed primarily at adults that remember the film from the first time round. They recreate key scenes from the movie: the speeder bike chase and the final encounter with Emperor Palpatine.
On top of that is a new Ultimate Collector Series X-wing, a recreation of the Rebel Alliance’s most famous starfighter, that appeared in all three original films.
The Emperor’s Throne Room diorama is made up of 807 pieces and features minifigures of the Emperor, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker. It faithfully recreates the set from the movie, including the Emperor’s chair and the window from which he watches the Battle of Endor.
The Endor Speeder Chase set is made up of 608 pieces and includes two speeder bikes plus minifigures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and a biker scout. There’re also two huge trees from the forest moon of Endor (in reality they were redwoods from California).
Both dioramas feature a display plaque with a movie quote, as well as a special 40th anniversary image. (set #75352) is £89.99 and (set #75353) is £69.99. Both sets will be released on May 1 on the Lego website and retail stores.
The new X-wing will be out three days later on May 4, which is always a special day for Star Wars fans as many companies, including Lego, run special May the 4th be With You promotions then, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for what they’ll do this year.
Although, actually, you can get the X-wing set on May 1 as well if you’re a Lego VIP member, which is a .
The Ultimate Collector Series are much larger scale vehicles aimed at adult collectors, with more detailed designs that aren’t necessarily meant for minifigures.
There’s been versions of the X-wing before, but this is the most detailed so far. It’s made up of 1,949 pieces and is over 55cm (12.5”) long. That includes opening and closing wings, plus minifigures of Luke Skywalker and R2-D2.
The USC X-wing costs £209.99 and is already listed on the .
The new sets will be on display at the 2023 event, which this year is taking place in London from Friday, April 7 to 10.
If you go along you can also pick up the set before it’s available anywhere else. It includes BrickHeadz (think Funko Pop! but made of Lego) versions of Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Lando Calrissian, an Ewok, and Princess Leia, as they appeared in Return of the Jedi.
If you don’t pick it up from Star Wars Celebration then you’ll have to wait till it’s available on May 1, for £39.99.
