Mandip Gill injures finger while fighting The Sea Devils in ‘swashbuckly’ Doctor Who special

Mandip Gill has revealed she suffered a nasty finger injury as she fended off monsters The Sea Devils while filming ’s upcoming special.

The action-packed episode of the BBC sci-fi series will see the former Hollyoaks actress, who plays Yaz, fight one of the Doctor’s () oldest enemies in a dramatic sword-fighting scene.

But in the middle of filming Gill nearly had to pause production to nurse her finger, which she hurt while filming alongside Jodie and John Bishop, who plays Dan.

Speaking to the , Gill joked: ‘It didn’t go down very well. I was like, “This sword is really heavy. And I’ve hurt my finger now. Shall we stop?”‘

But despite the pain, Mandip described the fight as an ‘amazing stunt’ and has said she ‘can’t stop thinking about it.’

‘I was like, I actually hurt my finger because of a Sea Devil. Not many people get to say that,’ she added.

Doctor Who fans have reason to be excited for ‘Legend of the Sea Devils’, which will land on BBC One and BBC IPlayer on April 17.

Gill teased that audiences can expect ‘a big family fun adventure” which is “really swashbuckly, exciting, but actually there’s so much heart.’

‘Chris [Chibnall] is really good at writing characters and emotion and we do get that through. 
‘It is epic. Like, the sets were amazing, the actors are amazing, the costumes and stuff… but there is so much heart in that episode,’ she added.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the BBC has said audiences will find out why legendary pirate queen Madam Ching has come searching for a lost treasure and discover what terrifying forces lurk beneath the oceans of the 19th century.

Legend of the Sea Devils will be Jodie’s penultimate special before she departs the show as the 13th Doctor. The first special in Jodie’s final trilogy aired on New Year’s Day, with the final one due to land in Autumn, according to the BBC.

Jodie’s replacement has, but one of the latest actors the role is Love Actually and The Undoing star Hugh Grant.

However, the 61-year-old took to Twitter to dispel the casting gossip, tweeting: ‘Nothing against Dr W but I’m not. No idea where the story came from.’

Other top talent who have been touted as the next Doctor include It’s A Sin stars Olly Alexander and Lydia West, while rumours are swirling that Sex Education actress Tanya Reynolds could be given the coveted gig of the Time Lord’s companion.

While fans will have to wait to find out more about the next Doctor, they have been treated to some details about Jodie’s regeneration episode, where she will bid a final goodbye to the Tardis.

Doctor Who’s outgoing executive producer Matt Strevens told Doctor Who magazine that Jodie’s last episode will be ‘a massive, feature-length epic’, which was ‘huge to shoot – with lots of surprises for fans of all ages.’

He added: ‘Jodie gets a really good send-off. I think it will push everybody’s buttons.’
