Chance The Rapper may be wondering if the good time was worth it after landing in hot water for dancing up close and personal with other women at a carnival in Jamaica, while being a married man.
The American rapper, 30, jetted over to the Caribbean island this week to enjoy the tropics, music and good vibes at the annual carnival in Kingston. It’s not known if his joined him on the trip.
Nonetheless, Chance – real name Chancellor Johnathan Bennett – fully embraced the spirit of the carnival and was in a great mood as he mingled with locals and other revellers while following the floats.
However, it was his dancing with a woman in costume that has caused a stir on social media.
In a video shared on TikTok and doing the rounds online, a topless Chance is seen with drink in hand and leaning back while the woman, dressed in a miniscule costume, twerked into his lap. As he slapped her bum, another costume-clad woman was also whinin’ into the first dancer’s lap.
A second video shared online shows Chance grinding with another young woman dressed in a leotard.
The videos have sparked a huge debate online, with some arguing that it’s all part of the cultural experience of Caribbean carnival – also seen at London’s Notting Hill Carnival each summer – while others feel it’s inappropriate given Chance is still believed to be a married man.
Shocked by the dancing, one commentator questioned: ‘Ain’t you married?’ while another claimed: ‘He got divorced I can tell.’
Another critic weighed in: ‘As far as Chance the rapper goes, I honestly don’t give a f**k what nobody is saying that s**t is inappropriate. Bottom f****n line.’
However, many others defended Chance and explained that it’s acceptable within Caribbean cultures to dance with others in this way.
‘This is what they do at Carnival. Why are people mad at Chance The Rapper?’ one supporter wondered.
Another stated: ‘They’re mad at Chance the Rapper for “cheating on his wife” y’all. Don’t bring that European nonsense to this ethnic household and let that man enjoy Caribbean culture.’
Sharing their thoughts, one tweeted: ‘Amaricans refusing to understand cultures outside of America will never not be funny to me because how tf are they saying Chance The Rapper is cheating on his wife at a Carnival [sic].’
Another suggested: ‘My thing is, everyone is speking for his wife when she hasn’t said anything about it being “inappropriate” for Chance the Rapper to dance, in any capacity, w/ another person.
‘Let’s his wife what she thinks first. Sheesh!’
Chance, who has not addressed the criticism, began dating Kirsten, 29, in 2013 and they welcomed their first child, daughter Kensli, in 2015.
The couple split in 2016 and became embroiled in a child support payment battle before the matter was settled out of court. They later reconciled and got engaged in 2018 before tying the knot the following year.
In September 2019, , a daughter named Marli.
