The hit police thriller, which began in 2012, divided fans at the end of its latest season when the identity of mysterious antagonist ‘H’ was revealed on Twitter.
Compston, who plays DS Steve Arnott, has revealed that the main cast have an active WhatsApp chat going with writer and showrunner Mercurio.
And that WhatsApp group has had a name change: ‘We have a chat group called “Line of Duty 6” and a while ago Jed changed the name of it to “Line of Duty 7”.’
Speaking on his own comedy podcast, Restless Natives, Compston continued: ‘What I love about it is we have never spoken about it since.
‘We have had such a good run with it and a bit of you does go “Let’s walk away on a high”, but we all want to work together again because we are so close.’
He continued: ‘We wouldn’t do it just for the sake of it. It would have to add to the series, it would have to make the series better.’
The last episode of season six was watched by an estimated 16.44 million people, one of the largest TV audiences recorded during the Covid pandemic.
At the time, it was revealed that the police thriller was s of the entire 21st century, nudging ahead of A Touch of Frost.
In response to the reactions shared by fans after the season six finale, and called out those who were left feeling unhappy.
