Kicking off the show, Martin explained what the price cap is, before going on to answer whether it’s best to stay on a variable rate or is it preferable to fix.

He also stressed the importance of taking a meter reading tomorrow, before the increase.

‘That draws a line in the sand with the energy firm and it says every single unit of energy I have used until this meter reading should be charged at the cheap rate,’ Martin said.

‘Don’t go estimating summers at the high rate. So, get your meter reading in and get that line in the sand drawn.’

Following the programme, Martin wrote: ‘Thank you @GMB for doing that special. I hope it was useful, and fingers crossed the govt listen over help for those with disabilities and serious illness.’

Viewers felt indebted to Martin’s advice and praised him for his tips and tricks.

‘Who really voted for these people?’ one wrote. ‘Honestly its ridiculous…. thank goodness #MartinLewis is answering some questions we all need answers to, I’d be genuinely screwed otherwise.’

‘@MartinSLewis is literally this country’s only saviour ATM!’ another penned.

‘His passion to help people survive all these hikes is amazing. @BorisJohnson @RishiSunak you two clowns should be ashamed, Boris SHOULDNT even be in the job anymore. Get Him Out.’
