’s hasn’t managed to tarnish his 11-year friendship with fellow musician The Japanese House as she praised The 1975 frontman for his unwavering support.Â
The singer – real name Amber Bain – opened up for the British pop-rock band ahead of their at ’s Finsbury Park on Sunday night.Â
Borrowing one of the members, Amber, 27, thrilled crowds in her own right with the help of Matty’s bandmate George Daniel blasting out the beat on drums – proving her close bond with the Cheshire natives.
The indie pop artist signed to the same record deal as The 1975, Dirty Hit, and quickly became a disrupter on the scene for her exploration of her identity through candid, soulful songs.Â
Following her triumph in the park, she exclusively chatted with Metro.co.uk backstage about her relationship with the band and Matty as a friend and co-writer.
Amber explained: ‘I’ve been friends with them for like 11 years now, they really feel like my family.Â
‘Matt will say crazy s**t sometimes but as people, I feel incredibly supported and it feels like we’re a family in a lot of ways.’
The 34-year-old Chocolate hitmaker has in recent months for his controversial actions – including labelling Harry Styles a ‘queerbaiter’ and making light of derogatory comments on a Â
Despite the chaos surrounding her Sunshine Baby collaborator, the singer explained that she felt supported by the performer as she geared up to headline her own tour.
She explained their friendship and expressed that seasoned tourer Matty would never push his advice onto her unless asked for it.
‘He’s not that kind of person like our dynamic isn’t like mentor-mentee. Our dynamic is really good friends.Â
‘He wouldn’t patronise me or give me advice unless I specifically asked for it. I think he’s just so supportive that he just thinks that whatever I do will be right because he just senses that that’s the right way.
‘I think that we’re such different bands, the same advice doesn’t apply. We are not on the same trajectory and I think that he’s more just sitting back and enjoying my music rather than trying to implement his own advice over me. It’s definitely not that dynamic.’
She further outlined how their writing sessions came about and mentioned: ‘We’ve always just been mates, that’s how it happens.Â
‘We were just mates for a long time and then you’re in and out the studio and just give each other ideas. I think we’ve been giving each other ideas for the last 11 years.’
Amber delighted fans when she recently dropped her second album In The End It Always Does and admitted she earned herself a new fan in the process.
While chatting about her career thus far, she excitedly remembered a DM she had received on the morning of the Finsbury Park show.
‘Harry Styles messaged me today! He just said that he liked one of my songs. It’s nice to have my music be well received by people that I admire – I feel very, very lucky.’
The singer-songwriter from Buckinghamshire touched on what to expect from her latest musical offering and shared: ‘The content of the album is I’m pouring out like basically my diary entries into these songs.
‘There is no real facade or anything. I think it’s really nice that, especially the queer aspect of my songs… the content of that is actually really powerful.
‘My fan base since like four years ago has got a lot more queer and it’s so nice because it reflects who I am.’
