Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 2 of on Plus.
Last week, Moon Knight … and episode two has continued in the same vein, finally introducing viewers to Mr Knight and Layla El-Faouly ().
In the lead up to the Marvel show’s release, fans were offered a glimpse of Oscar Isaac in action as the titular superhero, as well as the sparring identities of Steven Grant and Marc Spector, as the character went up against cunning cult leader Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke).
While saw him don Moon Knight’s iconic ensemble, Mr Knight – shown on the posters and in promo material as wearing a buttoned-up jacket, waistcoat and tie – was yet to be seen.
Not only does the second instalment show Steven become a conduit for Khonshu for the first time, but it also unveils more about Marc’s connection to the Egyptian moon god and Harrow’s intentions with the golden scarab that he was previously willing to kill Steven for.
Aftermath of Moon Knight’s battle with the jackal
Episode one of Moon Knight ended with an explosion of violence, after an Egyptian jackal chased after Steven in the museum where he works.
After being convinced by Marc to surrender the body, Steven eventually did so, and viewers were granted their first glimpse of Moon Knight in action as he defeated the jackal, obliterating the museum bathroom in the process.
In episode two, Steven arrives at work in the morning to find the bathroom cordoned off, before watching security footage with a colleague of the incident of the night before… only to discover that the jackal couldn’t be seen on the camera.
As if we didn’t already feel sorry for Steven, he ends up being fired by the museum – but fortunately, his workplace decides not to press charges. There’s one silver lining, at least.
Steven finds the scarab in Marc’s storage locker
When Steven came across Marc’s phone stashed away in his flat, he also found a key corresponding to a storage locker, which ended up opening up a whole can of worms.
The locker turns out to have been a place where Marc appeared to sleep, decked out like a military bunker, complete with a duffel bag containing a gun, money, a passport and the golden scarab, prompting Steven to realise that his near-fatal encounter with Harrow was real.
Marc tells Steven through his reflection that he was never meant to see any of this, explaining that he serves Khonshu as the Egyptian moon god’s avatar and stating: ‘We protect the vulnerable and deliver Khonshu’s justice to those who hurt them.’
Despite Marc’s protestations, Steven insists that he wants to turn the bag into the authorities, but is unable to get the chance.
Layla uses detective skills to track Steven down
After heading out of the storage facility, Steven finally bumps into Layla – who of course, believes that he’s Marc.
She explains that she tracked him down after they spoke on the phone, having believed that he was speaking in code when he answered as Steven with his unrecognisable British accent.
Following all the mystery surrounding Layla’s identity and how she was connected to Marc’s past, it’s finally revealed that she is Marc’s wife, but their marriage appears to have been on the rocks as she hands over divorce papers.
Steven decides to show Layla what’s in the bag, despite Marc’s warnings that he’s going to get her Ki**ed – as she expresses her shock over the discovery of the scarab, an artefact they fought to find together side-by-side, which leads to the Egyptian goddess Ammit’s tomb.
Marc’s history uncovered as Steven meets Harrow’s community
A lesson in why you should always be extra careful who you let into your home. After two police officers arrive at Steven’s flat, they take him away in their car, before revealing they work for Harrow.
Steven is given a small insight into Marc’s life, learning that he’s an international fugitive and mercenary who was somehow involved in the vicious deaths of a team of archaeologists.
After arriving at Harrow’s community, he is shown around by the cult leader, who not only shares how his followers are living in peace and happiness at their commune, but also that he used to be able to see Khonshu, but no longer has the ‘privilege’.
Harrow reveals that his cane was a gift from Ammit to her first avatar and contains ‘a tiny sliver of her power’, which he subsequently uses against Steven when Layla arrives with the scarab.
Mr Knight makes dashing debut ahead of Moon Knight’s trip to Egypt
As Harrow’s followers begin to close in on Steven and Layla, as well as another Egyptian jackal brought into the mix by Harrow, she urges him to summon the suit… but as he’s not Marc, he has no idea how.
Steven falls from a window in the building, but by the time he lands on the ground, he’s transformed into Mr Knight, a dapper alter ego of Moon Knight’s who wears a suave suit, as opposed to the hero’s traditional ceremonial armour from Khonshu’s temple.
While Layla fights off the jackal, despite not being able to see the creature, Steven manages to land a punch before letting Marc take over their body fully.
In the end, Steven is now the one trapped behind his reflection, with Marc explaining that he wants to protect Layla from Khonshu, who wants her to become the moon god’s next avatar.
Having lost the scarab to Harrow, who intends to use it to find Ammit’s tomb, the episode ends with Marc in Egypt, taking a swig from a drink with a view of the pyramids from his window.
Moon Knight is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
