While fans have been given their first glimpse of the cast of in action after the was released on Plus last week, the series is still shrouded in a lot of mystery.
A fair amount of that is down to the character of Layla El-Faouly, who is yet to be seen on screen opposite as Steven Grant/Marc Spector and as cult leader Arthur Harrow.
Layla is an archeaologist and an adventurer, who has some sort of link to Marc’s past that viewers are yet to discover ahead of the release of episode two.
While she has been seen in some promotional material for Moon Knight, with May also pictured posing with Oscar and Ethan at the screening and US premiere, the details of Layla’s identity are yet to be uncovered on the show.
So who is May and what else has she starred in?
Who is Layla actor May Calamawy?
May was born in 1986 in Bahrain to an Egyptian father and a Palestinian-Jordan mother, growing up in Doha, Quatar and Texas, US.
After finishing high school in Bahrain, she began studying industrial design in Boston, as her dad ‘wanted her to get involved in something other than acting’, reported in a 2014 interview.
However, halfway through the year she applied to Emerson College, going on to earn a degree in theatre studies from the college and subsequently take part in the New York Arab American Comedy Festival.
What else has she starred in?
May began her career acting in short films, before starring in the 2006 film Thursday with How To Get Away With Murder star Matt McGorry.
Her first major film role came in 2013, when she appeared in the supernatural horror film Djinn.
Last year she was in the comedy film Together Together, alongside Shrill’s Patti Harrison and The Office star Ed Helms.
She has also appeared in various TV shows including Madam Secretary, The Brave and FBI.
Since 2019, May has played the main role of Dena Hassan in Ramy, a comedy-drama streaming on Hulu in the US, which follows a first-generation American Muslim ‘who is on a spiritual journey in his politically divided New Jersey neighbourhood’.
May’s character, Dena, is Ramy’s sister, who frequently becomes frustrated by the double standards with which she and her brother are treated.
The show has received various accolades since its launch, including a Golden Globe win for Ramy Youssef, who co-created the show and stars as the lead character, and several Emmy nominations.
Ramy was renewed for a third season in July 2020, following the release of season two.
While on the promotional trail for Moon Knight, May shared a series of light-hearted selfies on Instagram with her Moon Knight co-stars Oscar and Ethan, writing in the caption: ‘Trying to socialize these guys. We’re getting there.’
She later shared photos of herself posing next to a billboard promoting the Marvel series.
