Mrs Doubtfire star Matthew Lawrence has weighed in on the future of following up or rebooting the film without .
While he’s reluctant to come back without the late Willims, Lawrence did indicate that there was a way in that would appeal to him.
The actor and podcaster, 44, appeared, with Mara Wilson and Lisa Jakub as his sisters.
They were the kids whose divorced voice actor father Daniel (Williams) was so desperate to see after splitting with their mother, played by Sally Field, that he developed his elaborate Mrs Doubtfire disguise to spend time with them as a housekeeper.
A recent that also starred soon-to-be James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was released, caused a burst of nostalgia among fans.
Now, Lawrence has given his thoughts on talks of a reboot for Mrs Doubtfire – and it’s a no for him without the beloved Williams, who died by suicide aged 63 in 2014.
‘I don’t think so. Without Robin, I don’t think that movie is possible,’ he told on Sunday.
However, he was aware there had been talk of something ahead of Williams’ death.
‘I mean, in 2014, they were talking about it, and everybody was kind of buzzing about it. And then obviously [Williams] passed away. So I don’t know. I wouldn’t want to do it without him, personally,’ Lawrence added.
He also said it was ‘up to [director] Chris Columbus and the creators’ if they decided to go ahead and reimagine or revisit Mrs Doubtfire in the future, but he personally ‘didn’t think’ there was anyone who could match up to Williams’ iconic performance.
When asked by the reporter if he thought it was best to just let the original 90s flick remain as the sole film, he responded that he thought so ‘at this point’ but there was every possibility the creative team could ‘come up with something really cool’.
He also revealed that he was keeping an open mind as to other approaches for revisiting the movie – and a documentary was method that piqued his interest.
‘I never thought about that, but documentaries are pretty cool. So, I don’t know, maybe we could do that!’ he shared.
Lawrence, Jakub and Wilson got together to record a special episode of the , which Lawrence hosts with his two actor siblings, Joey and Andrew, and is named after the sitcom of the same name they all starred in during the 1990s.
During the episode, Jakub melted fans’ hearts all over again when she retold a heartwarming story about Williams going to bat for her after she was expelled from school for taking time off to shoot the blockbuster film.
The Canadian’s school decided her on-set education was not up to standard and sent her a note telling her the arrangement wasn’t ‘working’ anymore and not to come back – which devastated the teenager.
‘The amazing thing was Robin saw that I was upset — he asked me what was going on,’ the actor recalled.
‘He wrote a letter to my principal saying that he wanted them to rethink this decision and that I was just trying to pursue my education and career at the same time, and could they please support me in this.’
Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to sway her headteacher however.
‘The principal got the letter, framed it, put it up in the office, and didn’t ask me to come back,’ Jakub added.
