The Movie and TV Awards have been added to a list of shows affected by the ongoing writers’ after it was announced they would no longer be held live.
Earlier this week host to striking writers.
Her decision came after thousands of members of the Writers Guild of , hitting the streets in Los Angeles and New York City after failing to negotiate increased salaries.
Now MTV has said a , with a pre-taped special to instead go to air.
‘As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honour the best of film and TV over the past year,’ the awards’ executive producer Bruce Gillmer said in a statement, as reported by .
Ahead of the awards, The Last of Us, Stranger Things, and Top Gun: Maverick lead the nominations with six each, followed by The White Lotus and Wednesday with four apiece.
The pivot for the event comes after Barrymore, 48, said she had ‘listened to the writers’ and ‘in order to truly respect them’ she would ‘pivot’ her hosting duties, and would instead host next year.
‘Everything we celebrate and honour about movies and television is born out of their creation,’ she said.
‘And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with.
‘And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.’
After her announcement, it was revealed the red carpet had been cancelled.
However, her decision was supported by MTV, with Gillmer saying Barrymore had the organisation’s ‘full support’.
‘Drew, without question, she’s been incredible. It’s hard to imagine that we’ve ever had a better experience with a host,’ he told Variety.
He also confirmed she was lined-up to host in 2024, but with a few days to go, he acknowledged other presenters and nominees might also be in doubt to attend and take part.
The originally announced list of presenters included Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gal Gadot and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Earlier this week Gilmer said MTV was ‘going to be super respectful’ of the talent’s decision to be involved or not.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023 are being held on Sunday May 8.
