Ncuti Gatwa confirms future of his role in Doctor Who

is taking on one of theand now the new star has revealed just how long we might for.

It’s now been just over a year since the actor wason the popular sci-fi series, which he is taking over from Jodie Whittaker.

At the time Ncuti, 30, said he was ‘deeply honoured, beyond excited and a little bit scared’ to have been cast, but would endeavour to ‘handle the unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care’.

Now he’s about how long he’s signed up for already.

Speaking about his desire to return to some theatre work at some point, Ncuti has explained how much acting on stage means to him.

‘It kept me warm and it held me all night, even if I was broke,’ he said.

‘But I’m planning on getting back to it next year, after I finish season two of Doctor Who,’ he added, confirming he would be playing the Time Lord for at least two seasons.

During the same interview with , Ncuti admitted that he wasn’t a massive fan of the show, but before auditioning for the part he decided to watch every single episode since its 2005 revival, after which he emerged a die-hard Whovian.

‘I fell in love with it. When you watch it, you forget all your troubles,’ he shared.

He also explained that his version of the character would be ‘emotionally vulnerable’ and whilst he hid those traits with humour, he was ‘lonely’.

While Ncuti hasn’t even been seen on screen in any Doctor Who episodes yet, earlier this year he achieved the feat of being singled out as .

Ncuti topped the RadioTimes.com TV 100 power list, a title he said was ‘bloody lovely’ to be recognised for.

Doctor Who will premiere exclusively on the BBC in the UK and Ireland and on Disney Plus internationally.
