Neil Morrisey would love to do a new series of Men Behaving Badly but fears it wouldn’t be ‘woke’ enough in 2022.
Men Behaving Badly ran for six series from 1992 to 1998, following Neil’s character Tony and his best mate Gary (Martin Clunes), and their exhausted girlfriends Deborah (Leslie Ash) and Dorothy ().
Neil said he would absolutely love to do another series but questioned if the sitcom is ‘woke’ enough today.
He said on podcast: ‘It’s all about the script. If Simon [Nye] writes something marvellous, we’d obviously have a look at it.
‘I don’t know if we could make it again now, though. It’s not woke enough is it? Putting ladies’ underpants on my head… things like that.
‘I guess Leslie was objectified a bit by my character. But that was the point of it – that we were really rubbish, and they were really cool and smart.Â
‘We were a couple of misogynist idiots who couldn’t keep a job, let alone a girlfriend.
‘I don’t know if it would work [now], but it would be fun trying. The way to do it would be to have the wokeness involved, in that Tony is so PC it’s unbelievable.
‘They would just have to have lapses after several beers on the sofa.’
Neil said he has chatted to Martin about a potential revival, but joked it would probably be a ‘retirement’ job for them.
Men Behaving Badly was one of the most successful British sitcoms of all time, with its finale boasting almost 14 million viewers.
Men Behaving Badly is available to stream on Netflix now.
