To explore these collections all viewers need to do is jump onto a web browser, type in “netflix.com/browse/genre/” and then add an ID code of choice to the end of the URL.
According Mary Bertone of Netflix’s Curation and Taxonomy team, the codes came about when Netflix was still DVD-only service.
A fan scraped together the ID codes of all the platform’s various types of films and TV series, which were available to the public on Netflix.com, and shared the list online.
People have been using the codes ever since, with thousands added since then.
Back when the pandemic was unfolding, one category created was Human Connections (81271205), while some escapism was provided in the form of Take a Trip Around the World (81282911).
With just around the corner now, those looking to be a little spooked can also search Small Town Scares (81496215), or if you’re already counting down to Christmas, Twisted Christmas (2300975), provides movies like Die Hard which might spark some friendly arguments about their inclusion in the festive flicks category.
If you’re someone who doesn’t want to commit too much time to whatever you’re watching, typing in 81466194 will offer short and snappy films that each run for under 90 minutes.
With 36,000 codes we can’t quite list them all for you, but here are some options to dive into this weekend for endless Halloween options.
