has admitted he finds it ‘brave’ that the winners of the extraordinary jackpot have gone public, wishing them ‘massive joy’.
On Thursday morning, couple Joe and Jess Thwaite from Gloucestershire revealed that they were the lottery winners .
Joe, who is a communications sales engineer, and Jess, who is a business manager in a hairdressing salon, explained that they’ve had a ‘hard few years’ during the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis, and plan on supporting their family with their riches.
On , Phillip and informed viewers about the EuroMillions update, saying it was a ‘very exciting morning’ for the couple after they became ‘Britain’s biggest ever lottery winners’.
A clip was shown of the pair speaking to Dermot O’Leary after going public, with Joe explaining that when he was notified about the Lucky Dip win via email, he initially thought the sum was in thousands.
As the camera returned to the ITV studio, Holly said the win was ‘the stuff of dreams’, while Phillip offered his congratulations.
‘They’re very brave to go public with that. But absolutely incredible,’ he remarked.
The presenter added that he hopes the multi-million pound jackpot brings the Thwaite’s and their loved ones lots of happiness in future.
‘Let’s hope it brings you massive – you and everyone you know, tenfold – a massive amount of joy,’ he said.
Several viewers commented on the idea of going public with a lottery win, with some saying they would keep it a secret if they were in the Thwaites’ position.
‘Why would a lottery winner go public? Never understood it,’ one person tweeted.
‘If i won the lottery there is no way i’d be going on tv and telling the world,’ another said.
Someone else said that there’s ‘no way’ they’d reveal their identity, with another remarking: ‘Not a chance.’
After the news broke, Jess said: ‘Just like many people and families across the country, the last few years have been hard. My sister and I have tried to look after the business and the 20 staff, but times are difficult in hairdressing.
‘Joe has been working hard and we have always tried to put everything into doing the best we can for the children.
‘We’ve had one week to think about this and we now have time to share lots of experiences and go on adventures with our family and friends.’
