The continued success of Pokémon Go hasn’t slowed it down one bit, with new updates coming to mega evolutions.
Pokémon Go is continuously updated with new features, research tasks for players to take on, and an ever growing roster of critters to keep you playing for months on end.
While developer Niantic don’t want it to feel like a completely separate entity, the game now also features battling and events based on the franchise’s Safari Zone.
This even includes mega evolutions, a feature that was introduced in Pokémon X and Y, but promptly dropped in the entries following it. Pokémon Go, though, has not forgotten the concept.
How is mega evolution changing in Pokémon Go?
In a video update and blog, Niantic detail the new features for how mega pokémon will work. This includes mega raids being easier to complete, including evolving the pokémon from preparation screens rather than just in battle.
A major problem with mega evolutions in Pokémon Go is that they were severely limited by the resources you’d need to collect. Without them, you would be unable to get any of the bonuses that activate whenever you have a mega pokémon out.
With this in mind, Niantic will now only require you to mega evolve your pokémon once. Once done, you’ll get a special flair to indicate you’ve mega evolved it and then you just have to wait until a ‘rest period’ is over before doing it again.
Niantic hasn’t detailed how long this rest period is, but have said that mega energy you’ve acquired in the game will reduce this waiting time.
How to mega evolve isn’t the only way that Pokémon Go is changing either. The game will introduce mega levels, which work indepdently of the regular pokémon levels. Now, each time you manage to mega evolve a pokémon you earn a new mega level and bonus.
When the game updates to this new method of mega evolution, you’ll be able to earn the following bonuses:
- Increased candy when you catch a pokémon of the same type as your mega evolved pokémon.
- Pokémon taking part in raids or gym battles will deal more damage if attacking with your mega pokémon. If they’re the same type, they will deal even more damage.
- Increased chance to get XL candies to evolve pokémon if you catch the same type as your mega evolved pokémon.
- Increased XP if you catch the same type as your mega pokémon.
- The rest period will decrease with each mega level.
When does the Pokémon Go mega evolution update go live?
There’s currently no date set for the update, but it can be expected to hit before the , Pokémon Go Fest in June.
A hint at the end of the video includes the cries of legendary pokémon Mega Latios and Mega Latias, one of which has begun appearing in the currently happening at the moment.
