Barbie promises to be and this week the film’s stars and creators offered the most extensive insight yet into the film.
The likes of , director Greta Gerwig and even bigwigs at Mattel – Barbie’s parent company – spoke about the blockbuster in a new interview, but some perspectives seemed to clash.
In fact, Richard Dickson, COO and president of Mattel, even flew to during filming to ‘argue’ with 32-year-old Margot and 39-year-old Greta about a scene.
Richard felt the scene was ‘off brand’ but changed his mind once Margot and Greta acted it out.
Speaking , Margot explained: ‘When you look on the page, the nuance isn’t there, the delivery isn’t there.’
Elsewhere in the interview, it was revealed that while many of the movie’s cast used the word feminist ‘unprompted’ when describing Greta’s script, Robbie Brenner, an executive producer at Mattel Films, insisted ‘it isn’t a feminist film’.
When Margot was asked about Robbie’s comments, it seems she wasn’t particularly thrilled, with journalist Eliana Dockterman saying she ‘raised an eyebrow’ before asking: ‘Who said that?’
The Australian actress then noted that ‘it’s not that it is or it isn’t,’ adding: ‘It’s a movie that’s got so much in it.’
Aside from Margot, Will Ferrell stars as CEO of toy company Mattel, while Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera, SNL’s Kate McKinnon, Marvel’s Simu Liu, Insecure’s Issa Rae, new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Emerald Fennell, and Emma Mackey also all have parts, with the movie featuring multiple Barbies and Kens.
Barbie will hit cinemas on July 21 and follows the world-famous doll as she leaves Barbie Land with Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) and embarks on a life alongside other humans.
Greta, who co-wrote the film with her partner writer/director Noah Baumbach, previously told fans to expect the unexpected.
Can’t. Freaking. Wait.
