Hopes that the remake of Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time will be released any time soon have been dashed again as the game switches developers.

It’s now 12 years since the release of a new Prince Of Persia game on consoles and it sounds like it’s going to be several more before we ever see the remake of PlayStation 2 classic The Sands Of Time.

The remake was announced back in September 2020 but has been delayed innumerable times since then, in the first instance because of fan reaction to the (in particular the faces, if you remember that furore).

From there its release was moved from January to March 2021, before it was delayed indefinitely in February. In June it was given a new release window of and now… it’s changed developers entirely.

The remake was previously being made by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, but development will now be taken over by Ubisoft Montreal.

As the Twitter announcement points out, Ubisoft Montreal worked on the original version back in 2003, although without series creator Jordan Mechner and director Patrice Désilets that doesn’t necessarily mean much.

Ubisoft Montreal are a much more experienced developer though, as the two Indian studios are usually just quality assurance and support teams. However, since the original game is set in India, that did seem a good opportunity for them to try working on a whole game themselves.

‘This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready,’ reads the announcement.

That means the remake is back to having not even a vague release date, which in turn means any chance of a genuinely new entry in the series have been pushed back even further.
