His private estate and museum, Paisley Park, was the site of some of Prince’s most famous recordings, and will now face a road named after him.
A seven-mile stretch of Minnesota State Highway 5 will have its name changed from Arboretum Boulevard to Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway.
In addition, the new sign marking the beginning of the road will be purple, which was the signature colour of Prince’s clothing, instruments, and visual material.
Speaking about Prince, Minnesota senator Julia Coleman said in a statement: ‘Prince was a true genius, a visionary artist who pushed the boundaries of music and culture.’
The statement continued, praising Prince’s artistry and creativity and for pushing boundaries ‘in ways that will never be forgotten.’
‘His influence can be heard in the work of countless musicians who came after him, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists to this day.’
Before his death, Prince owned 65,000 square feet of Paisley Park, where his famous albums Sign O the Times and Lovesexy were recorded.
During his career, 16 of his singles reached the UK top 10, with 1994 hit The Most Beautiful Girl in the World reaching number one for two weeks.
Of the 40 studio albums he released in his lifetime, five of them reached number one in the UK, with his last being 1994 album Come.
During the pandemic, Prince’s music was in order to continue ‘breaking boundaries’, even after his death.
Prince’s estate adviser Troy Carter said: ‘It is our hope that a new generation of global fans can find meaning in Prince’s music, and be inspired to create.’
