Raven Symone has led a walk out from her series, Raven’s Home, after the corporation’s response to the ‘don’t say gay’ bill.
, named the Parental Rights in Education bill, was recently passed in Florida, limiting educators in the state from teaching young children about sexual orientation and gender identity.
but Disney was initially silent on the matter – with the company facing mass walk-outs over its inaction to use its political influence to publicly condemn the move as Florida’s largest private employer.
Raven, who stars as the lead character of the same name in her long-running series, shared a video with her colleagues as they protested the inaction.
‘We are walking out today in [protest against] this ridiculous bill…,’ she began the clip.
‘We don’t like it! We’re walking out. It’s stupid. We love everyone. Support, support, support.’
Alongside the footage, the Black-ish star wrote in the caption: ‘In support of our LGBTQ+ family and all of those who will be damaged by the “don’t say gay bill” we the cast of Ravens Home are walking out.
‘In todays world it is imperative that we take stands, show support, and move forward not backwards.
‘Every family every person and every child deserves to be recognized no matter their race, gender, or sexual orientation.
‘Education that reflects the truth and the world we live in is something we must fight for. #dontsaygaybill #??️??.’
The Parental Right in Education bill will restrict schools in Florida from teaching students about sexual orientation and gender issues – with Republican politicians arguing that parents should be the ones to educate their children on these topics.
Teachers could possibly face lawsuits and legal battles if they do not follow the controversial rules.
Raven’s protest comes after against the ruling.
In a virtual junket for new Marvel show Moon Knight, he made his feelings known, labelling the law ‘insane’ and ridiculous’.
When asked for his opinion on the news, he said, via Variety: ‘I guess my comment would be: gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gayyyyyy!
‘It’s an absolutely ridiculous law. It’s insane. It’s insanity. And I hope that Disney as a company comes out as forcefully as possible against this idea.
‘It’s astounding that it even exists in this country.’
The Walt Disney Company, and CEO Bob Chapek, had previously been slammed for appearing to take a soft stance on the bill.
He later apologized for the company’s silence on the matter in a memo to staff members – and is thought to have suspended their political donations in Florida.
‘It is clear that this is not just an issue about a bill in Florida, but instead yet another challenge to basic human rights,’ it read, via Buzzfeed. ‘You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. I am sorry.
‘I truly believe we are an infinitely better and stronger company because of our LGBTQ+ community.
‘I missed the mark in this case but am an ally you can count on – and I will be an outspoken champion for the protections, visibility, and opportunity you deserve.’
