Sam Ryder confirms Prince William and Kate Middleton actually watched Eurovision with the family and backed him all the way

The Royals are just as big fans of the national treasure that is as the rest of us it seems.

The , who came second behind Ukraine this year, has revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge and other members of the royal family tuned in to watch him perform in Turin in May.

The Space Man singer actually met , Prince William, as well as the prince’s cousin, , after his last weekend and the pair revealed they had followed his journey to the competition.

Sam confessed: ‘I said “Hello” to Kate, and she was asking about the performance.

‘She is so kind and said that the royal family had all been supporting me for a while and all throughout Eurovision.

‘Then Princess Beatrice came over and had a chat with us too,’ he added to People magazine.

‘She was just so lovely and encouraging and supporting. And just generous with her kindness.’

He continued: ‘She was just saying that they all appreciated the way that the team had handled the Eurovision journey, and that meant so much to all of us.

‘What I gather is a lot of the members of the royal family had seen Eurovision and were supporting my song from home, which means a lot.’

Sam added that it was ‘incredible’ and ‘so inspiring’ to have the encouragement from the royals, saying that ‘they stand for’ themes that are Eurovision celebrates, including unity and solidarity.

‘And that coming together of people in a world that seems to find ways of disconnecting us at any given time,’ he added.

The Duchess of Cambridge even made a joke about Sam’s iconic sparkling Union Jack jumpsuit.

He recalled that she joked that ‘someone would have to hoover up a few of my stones the next morning because they’d probably be falling off as I was walking around.’

Sam’s legendary performance at the Platinum Jubilee concert blew audiences away, with fans taking to social media to share their thoughts – and many likening him to Freddie Mercury and stating he put on a show the late Queen frontman would have been proud of.

‘Sam Ryder is putting some of these big acts to shame,’ one person wrote. ‘He’s got some voice on him and a natural performer to boot. Getting Freddie Mercury vibes there.’
