Se7en director David Fincher has finally settled one of the biggest mysteries in cinema history, just in time for the film’s re-release in cinemas.

The legendary flick first premiered in September, 1995, with and Morgan Freeman leading the way as two detectives based on the seven deadly sins.

Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow also made up the cast, with the gritty thriller going down as one of the best movies of all time.

To celebrate the 30-year anniversary, in IMAX venues, as well as special Blu-Ray and 4K editions.

In a new interview to mark the re-release, David shed light on the final moments just before the credits rolled, and shared what was actually in the infamous box that Morgan’s character, Detective Somerset, opened.

Speaking to , the filmmaker also addressed a bizarre claim that the crew made ‘a prosthetic head or entire body of Gwyneth Paltrow’ that didn’t get used in the final cut, insisting: ‘No, it’s entirely ridiculous. I think we had a seven or eight-pound shot bag.

‘We had done the research to figure out, if Gwyneth Paltrow’s body mass index was X, what portion of that would be attributable to her head. And so, we had an idea of what that would weigh, and I think there was a weight in it.

‘And we did put a wig in there, so that when Morgan rips the box open if there were some of this tape that was used to seal the box – I think it was a shot bag and a wig, and I think the wig had a little bit of blood in it, so some of the hair would stick together.

‘Remember, I think Morgan opened 16 or 17 of those things.  But as I always say, you don’t need to see what’s in the box if you have Morgan Freeman.’

Se7en became an instant hit when it was released three decades ago, and the acclaim has only grown in that time.

It currently commands a whopping 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a critics ranking of 83%.

Heaping praise on David’s crime-riddled masterpiece, Yaniel G wrote: ‘The best movie of its kind. Set a high standard for the genre. The acting, the cast, the hidden name and the plot is top notch. What’s in the box?!’

‘I can give 7 reasons why this is probably the greatest thriller ever made,’ Shaun R agreed.

John T commended: ‘Fincher’s masterpiece. As grim a piece of worldbuilding as you’ll ever see, with a finale that still rattles me almost 30 years later.’

As Muhammad Huzeify S added: ‘This movie is an absolute masterpiece , absolutely fantastic, the ending really gets under my skin.’

However, things could have been very different for all involved as Denzel Washington previously confessed that he turned down a role in the flick that eventually went to Brad.

In a candid 2018 interview with Jamie Foxx, he was questioned about whether he ‘ever says no’ to projects.

‘I turned down Se7en. They wanted me to play the Brad Pitt part,’ he shared. ‘I thought the script was too demonic.

‘Then I saw the movie, and I was like “Oh, I blew it!” But, you know, it worked out alright.’

Imagine Denzel’s dulcet tones begging to know ‘what’s in the box’?!
